Sclerotherapy
At Lasers in Medicine, we understand that every patient is unique. That’s why we tailor our sclerotherapy treatments to meet your specific needs, ensuring the best possible outcomes. Your satisfaction and well-being are our top priorities.
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to address varicose veins and spider veins. During the procedure, a sclerosing solution (a special chemical) is injected directly into the affected veins. This solution irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse and stick together. Over time, the treated vein fades and is reabsorbed by the body.
KEY BENEFITS
Sclerotherapy is effective for reducing the appearance of veins and alleviating symptoms like pain and swelling. The procedure typically requires no downtime, and patients can usually resume normal activities immediately afterward. Some vessels are too large to be treated with this method, and may require Endovenous Laser Ablation. Your doctor will advise you of the best treatment options.

Common questions

How does sclerotherapy work?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosing solution into the affected veins. This solution causes the vein walls to collapse and stick together. Over time, the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body and fades from view.
What can I expect during the sclerotherapy procedure?
During the procedure, a fine needle is used to inject the sclerosing solution into the veins. You may feel a slight sting or discomfort during the injection. The procedure typically lasts 30 minutes.
What is the recovery time after sclerotherapy?
Recovery time is minimal. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately. However, you might experience the veins appearing more prominent, some swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites, which usually resolves within a few weeks.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with sclerotherapy?
Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, and redness at the injection sites. Rare risks include allergic reactions, skin ulcers, or blood clots. Your healthcare provider will discuss these potential risks and how to manage them.
How many sclerotherapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required varies depending on the size and number of veins being treated. Typically, multiple sessions are needed for optimal results, with several weeks between treatments to allow the veins to heal and fade. Your doctor will provide a personalised treatment plan based on your specific needs.
Will the veins come back?
After treating all veins large enough to be injected, some tiny pink vessels may remain. These vessels are too small for injection and do not respond to laser treatment. While achieving 90% clearance is common, complete disappearance of all veins is rare. It’s normal for new veins to appear occasionally. We recommend scheduling a “maintenance” treatment each winter to address any new or remaining veins and ensure optimal results for the summer.
