Endovenous Laser Ablation

For larger and more complex varicose veins, our doctors use Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA). This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting a laser fibre into the affected vein through a small incision. The laser energy heats and collapses the vein, causing it to seal shut. The treated vein is then gradually reabsorbed by the body.

Minimally Invasive
Effective Treatment
Improved recovery times
Comfortable

EVLA is performed under local anaesthesia and is preferred for its effectiveness and quick recovery compared to traditional surgical methods. The published success of EVLA treatment has been reported up to 99.8% with far fewer complications as compared to stripping surgery. You will be up and walking immediately with a compression stocking on and required to walk everyday for 30 minutes.

Common questions

What should I expect during the EVLA procedure?

During EVLA, a small laser fibre is inserted into the affected vein through a small cannula the size of a blood test needle The laser energy is used to heat and collapse the vein, causing it to seal shut. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia, and you may feel some pressure or mild discomfort. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

How long does it take to recover after EVLA?

Recovery from EVLA is generally quick. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days. You may experience mild bruising or swelling, but these symptoms typically resolve within a week or two. It’s advisable to wear compression stockings and follow the post-procedure care instructions provided.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with EVLA?

EVLA is considered safe with a low risk of complications. Common side effects include mild bruising, swelling, or discomfort in the treated area. Rare risks may include skin burns, nerve injury, or deep vein thrombosis. Your doctor will discuss potential risks and how to minimise them during your consultation.
