What is Skin Pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation refers to the colouring of the skin, which is primarily determined by melanin, a pigment produced by cells called melanocytes. Various factors can disrupt melanin production, leading to pigmentation disorders:
Hyperpigmentation
This condition occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, resulting in dark spots or patches. Common types include melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Hypopigmentation
This occurs when there is a decrease in melanin production, leading to lighter patches of skin. Conditions like vitiligo and albinism are examples of hypopigmentation.
