What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that often appear blue or dark purple. They occur when the valves in the veins become weakened or damaged, leading to blood pooling and vein enlargement.

Causes:

  • Genetics: Family history can increase the risk.
  • Age: The risk increases with age.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy: Increased blood volume and hormonal changes can contribute.
  • Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Can impede blood flow.

Common Concerns:

  • Aesthetic appearance of legs.
  • Pain, swelling, or heaviness in the legs.
  • Itching or skin discoloration near veins.

How Do We Treat It?

At Lasers In Medicine, we offer a range of treatments for varicose veins:

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

EVLA is a minimally invasive procedure for larger and more complex varicose veins. A laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein through a small incision. Laser energy heats and collapses the vein, causing it to seal shut. The treated vein is then gradually reabsorbed by the body. EVLA is preferred for its effectiveness and quick recovery compared to traditional surgical methods such as stripping.

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (UGS) is used for veins that are deeper and not visible on the surface. An ultrasound is used to guide the injection of a sclerosing agent into the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually fade away. This technique ensures precise treatment of the targeted vein.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is effective for reducing the appearance of veins and alleviating symptoms like pain and swelling. The procedure typically requires no downtime, and patients can usually resume normal activities immediately afterward. Some vessels are too large to be treated with this method and may require EVLA.

How Do We Support Results Long Term?

Achieving and maintaining optimal results involves ongoing care:

  • Compression Garments: Wearing compression stockings as recommended helps support vein health and enhances treatment outcomes.
  • Follow-Up Treatments: Regular check-ups to monitor progress and address any concerns.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
